I was amazed and delighted to be awarded the Frontier Design Prize in October 2025. An initiative of the city of Shanghai, the Prize was for my “exceptional and far-reaching contribution to the field of regenerative design and social innovation”. That was my own highlight of 2025 - but what comes next?

I help universities develop innovation and design projects. I curate festivals and biennials which bring these project leaders together.

“Balancing proximity and modernity” is the informal theme for our last MeetUp of the year which starts on 28 August (until 4 September).

I’m borrowing the words from Frédéric Bosqué who’s developing a rural transition neighborhood called Tera in the Aquitaine region of France. https://www.tera.coop/ Bosqué reckons regions like his, and Les Cévennes, where we live, are examples of what he calls Rurality 2.0 – a way of life in which nature, culture, and technology are combined in new ways.

linkedin.com/in/fredericbosque

Is Rurality 2.0 a viable thing? Demand for new ways of living is certainly strong among privileged Europeans. Fifty seven per cent of city dwellers in France, for example, say they would like to live closer to nature. Among them, a significant minority would like to live in some kind of ecological settlement in which housing is shared, and healthy vegetables are produced on cooperative farms, and so on.

Despite this strong interest mass resettlement in ecovillages is not happening. “The reality is brutal” Bosqué observes; “80 per cent of planned eco-places never come to fruition. They flourish in people’s minds, and then whither on the ground”.

The short life-expectancy of ecovillages is not a new phenomenon. California’s Utopian Colonies: 1850-1950 – published in 1953 – chronicles a steady stream of projects which failed due to the same political, economic and cultural conflicts that Bosqué identifies, today.

Are there other ways than ecovillages to balance proximity and modernity in practice? We like to think our MeetUps have those qualities – but we don’t live in a designed community. On the contrary, we arrived in this small market town pretty much by accident. But we’re almost local, by now, in a town that’s been adapting to change for more than 1,000 years. We’ll be happy to share what we’ve learned in the last 24 of those.

Frédéric Bosqué runs immersive weekends for anyone wishing to experience Tera close up. The next two are 6/7 September and 25/26 October.

I’m advising a new design school in India – BITSdesign – founded by Kumar Mangalam Birla, and led by its Dean, Nandita Abraham. Last September, I co-curated a two day conference in Mumbai on the theme of “Care, Value, Place”. We asked 20 grassroots project leaders to tell us whether – and if so, how – design might aid their work. Their projects included regenerative water systems; the social life of mobility; community-based recycling; social design; Community Managed Natural Farming. We are planning a second event this September. Meanwhile, September’s Care Value Place keynote videos have been posted on this YouTube channel:

Then, last week, I had “Wait A Minute!” moment. As I began to update my Designing for Life in Practice Handout, I noticed a curious thing: among these thousands of inspiring people, hardly any describe themselves as a ‘regenerative designer’ or ‘systems thinker’ or ‘transition practitioner’. It’s the same in our Open School for Village Hosts or the Urban-Rural projects. The world of systems thinking shares a different language from the world of those who care for place in practice.

Another anomaly stands out where these two worlds meet – thinking about systems, and caring for place. The uniqueness of place is hard for systems thinking to cope with. Systems thinking aspires to be – well, systematic. But blueprints, canvases and method cards are thin on the ground – literally – among place-caring practitioners. The mismatch here is that mainstream science, management – and therefore funders – need project outcomes to be predictable, controllable, and verifiable. That’s how technoscience works. But that’s not how life works in places.

In addition to divergent languages (between systems thinking, and caring for place); and on top of the unmeetable need of funders for replicability and scale; a third dilemma concerns project duration. Running short workshops is standard practice in design research – I’ve done many place-based workshops myself. But places, I’ve learned, run on different timescales than universities – or living labs run by researchers. It feels wrong, now to take a group of experts to a locality, spend an intense few days on site – and then we visitors pack up and go home. Reconnecting with place needs to happen continuously, and over the long-term.

Can these three mismatches be fixed? I think the answer is yes – and that the MeetUps we’re hosting this year are a good place to start. Don’t come if you’re looking for pre-cooked answers – but they are a good place and time to explore pathways towards them. To judge by the projects people have come with in the past, this space between systems thinkers, and those who care for place in practice, is fertile ground for conversation.

So, if you’re a mid-career professional, or postgraduate student; are curious about what designing for life can mean in practice; and are working on a live project, thesis, course, or book; well, do check out thackara.com/meetinfrance
